Chester Community Coalition, a project of Urban Affairs Coalition

The Chester Community Coalition has a rich history of supporting survivors and families impacted by gun-related violence in the city of Chester and Delaware County. The Chester Community Coalition started when volunteers from Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence noticed the heavy burden of grief carried by Chester residents impacted by gun violence at the t-shirt demonstrations they organized. The coalition recognized the urgent need for comprehensive services to address the far-reaching effects of gun violence in the community.

The organization began as a grassroots movement, with Fran Stier, Sister Jean Repertus, the Sisters of Saint Francis, concerned community members, local leaders, and mental health professionals coming together to address the trauma and grief experienced by those affected by gun-related violence. Their collective efforts led to the establishment of the coalition, which has since become a cornerstone of support for individuals and families affected by such incidents.

The services provided by the Chester Community Coalition are extensive and diverse, reflecting a holistic approach to healing and empowerment. Case management is offered to ensure that survivors and families have access to essential resources and support systems. Individual therapy provides a safe and confidential space for processing trauma and rebuilding emotional well-being. Family grief therapy helps families navigate their collective grief and strengthen their bonds in the face of tragedy.

Additionally, peer support is available to connect individuals with others who have shared similar experiences, fostering a sense of community and understanding.
