Honoring Legacy, Preserving History
A Legacy Rooted in Community in May 1907, Lawrence Murray, Sr. envisioned a place where history, honor, and community would converge. That vision became Green Lawn Cemetery in Chester Township, Pennsylvania—a hallowed ground that pays tribute to the lives and legacies of countless individuals. Among them are veterans who served our nation with courage and distinction, from the Civil War to the Vietnam War, including the celebrated Buffalo Soldiers. It is also the resting place of African American community members whose contributions and sacrifices have shaped our shared history. Each marker, every blade of grass, whispers a story of resilience, sacrifice, and love. Green Lawn Cemetery stands as a sacred testament to these enduring leg
A Mission Worth Supporting

Restoration efforts are defined by individual stories and histories.
Arthur Carl Hudson’s grave was located after volunteers cleared fourteen feet of dense vegetation, allowing his family—who had nearly lost hope—to witness the reappearance of his memorial stone.
Jeff Bruton, a U.S. Army veteran, was identified between two women’s graves in Section 2. A military marker has been requested to formally recognize his service.
Arthur Raymond and Helen Stinson were found near Alexander McClay Williams’s grave; their memorials, once obscured, have now been restored and made visible.
The search for Richard and Lucinda Chisholm is ongoing due to overgrowth in their section. Their family has committed to assisting further restoration efforts in Spring 2026, demonstrating continued engagement with the project.
Each uncovered name represents renewed access to family heritage. Discoveries provide connections for generations who believed their relatives were lost.
Visiting Green Lawn today reveals significant transformation. Previously neglected grounds have been cleared, and volunteer activity fosters community engagement. Restored pathways allow for the recognition of individuals—including educators, veterans, clergy, parents, and children—whose lives contributed to Chester’s community development.
