Compassion United Havertown

Compassion United Havertown (CUH) is a grassroots 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded to assist our neighbors who are going through a temporary crisis, and we need your help. 

Our mission is based on the personal story of our founder, Rachel McGonigle.  In 2017, Rachel received devastating news that her 12-year-old son Sam had Hodgkins Lymphoma. Less than two months later, his youngest sister Aislin (5) was diagnosed with the very same cancer. As you can imagine, life quickly became unmanageable for Rachel and her family of six. She was simply trying to get through the days and often felt overwhelmed.

On the day before Easter, Rachel had forgotten about making baskets for her four children. She had been at CHOP all week with Aislin, who had a fever. She posted on Facebook’s Havertown Community Group explaining her situation and asked if anyone could make last-minute baskets for her kids. She was astounded when more than 200 strangers responded. Some prepared Easter breakfast and dinner. Others brought money, gift cards, and thoughtful gifts for each of the kids.

That night she went to bed, simply in awe that strangers would do this for her family. That’s when it happened -- God gave her this incredible idea, a way to help others as I had been helped. That night she posted on Facebook that she had a vision and asked for interested volunteers.  Two days later, 20 people met at a dining room table, and CUH was born. The concept was to choose a local family in need, interview them, post their story and their immediate needs so the community could lend a hand.  

Since our founding, a few hundred residents have assisted 50+ families, donating groceries, clothes, household goods, and gift cards to local stores or restaurants.  With your help, CUH can continue to provide for families in crisis, while building the kind of community where neighbors help their neighbors.  There isn’t a more impactful way to give to your community than to become a sponsor of CUH, and all donations are tax-deductible.  Please feel free to contact us at CompassionUnitedHavertown@gmail.com  if you have any questions.
