Chester, PA — A new chapter of beauty, remembrance, and community renewal is unfolding in the heart of Chester. The Cathedral Gardens Project, a visionary initiative led by Legacy Arts Chester in partnership with the Chester Historical Preservation Committee, will transform the remains of the historic 3rd Presbyterian Church into a stunning public mosaic garden.

Once a cornerstone of faith, community life, and architectural significance, 3rd Presbyterian Church has stood as a silent witness to generations of Chester residents. Though the building suffered devastating fire damage, its remaining stone walls and Gothic architectural features continue to tell a story of resilience, heritage, and enduring legacy. Rather than demolish what remains, this project seeks to preserve and reimagine the sacred space—honoring its past while breathing new life into its future.

The Cathedral Gardens Project will convert the church ruins into an immersive outdoor experience featuring handcrafted mosaic pathways, vibrant garden installations, sculptural seating, and artistic storytelling elements created in collaboration with local artists and youth. The design embraces the existing structure, allowing the preserved stone walls and arches to frame a space of reflection, creativity, and community gathering.

The Chester Historical Preservation Committee has emphasized the importance of safeguarding the site’s historical integrity. 3rd Presbyterian Church represents a significant piece of Chester’s architectural and cultural heritage, and this project ensures that its legacy is not lost, but instead integrated into a new and living expression of the city’s identity. 

Community engagement will be central to the project, with opportunities for residents —especially young people—to participate in the creation of mosaic artwork and garden features. The space is envisioned not only as a visual landmark but as a hub for education, reflection, and creative programming.
