For us, this mission is personal.

We are Mark and Beth Kessler, parents of six children, including our son Josiah, who has an intellectual disability. As he approached adulthood, we began searching for what his future could look like. What we found was discouraging—nearly 80% of adults with intellectual disabilities are unemployed.

Not because they lack ability.
Because opportunities are limited.

We knew there had to be a better way.

From Idea to Action

In 2022, we launched Third Horse Coffee as a nonprofit with a clear mission: create a place where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can work, grow, and belong.

But instead of waiting to open a coffee shop, we started building the business first.

Over the past three and a half years—actively selling for two and a half—we have:

• Generated nearly $130,000 in coffee and merchandise sales

• Supplied coffee to churches, organizations, and community partners

• Supported fundraising efforts for schools and nonprofits

• Created hands-on work opportunities for Josiah through order fulfillment, deliveries, and events

This has allowed us to prove something important:

People care about this mission—and they support it.

Now, We’re Ready for the Next Step

We are actively working to secure a location to open our first coffee shop.

This space will provide real, ongoing employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—a place where they can:

• Contribute in meaningful ways

• Build confidence and independence

• Experience community and connection

And it will be a place where the broader community can gather, enjoy great coffee, and be part of something that truly matters.
